On the 40th day after the birth of Jesus Christ, Mary and Joseph fulfilled the law mentioned in the Old Testament, which decreed that on the 40th day after the birth of a boy, and on the 80th day after the birth of a girl, every mother should bring to the door to the sanctuary, a one-year-old lamb for a burnt offering, as a sign of recognition of God's highest authority over oneself and thanks, and a dove - as a sacrifice for sins. After that, the woman was considered purified.
The same law prescribed that the firstborn son had to be brought to the shrine and sacrificed to God.
This event is described in the Gospel. As it was said, at that time the meeting of Christ with the righteous Simeon, predicted by God, took place. This is how St. describes that day to us. evangelist Luke: "It was revealed to him (Simeon) by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death until he saw Christ the Lord. He came in the Spirit to the temple. And when the parents brought the baby Jesus to perform the legal custom on him, he took him in his arms, blessed God and said: "Now, Lord, you can let your servant go in peace according to your word, because my eyes have seen your salvation, that you prepared before all nations; a light for the enlightenment of the Gentiles, and the glory of your people - Israel" (Lk. 2, 26-32).
