The holiday in honor of this icon is celebrated twice a year - on July 21 and November 4.

The Kazan icon of the Mother of God has a very interesting history. It was found in the 16th century by a little girl, Matrona, at the site of a great fire that destroyed part of the city of Kazan, after the Mother of God herself appeared to her three times in a dream and pointed out the place where the icon was hidden.

Many lists were made of the Kazan icon of the Mother of God, and the icon itself became famous for its miracles - the sick were healed, the blind received their sight, enemies were defeated and expelled.

Feast of the Kazan Icon - traditions and rituals of the day

The day of the celebration of the Kazan icon of the Mother of God has long been considered one of the main women's holidays, and it is not for nothing that the icon is called the "Patroness of the Kazan Woman". There are many rites and rituals used by women in ancient times.

A birch leaf gives beauty and protects against old age. For this, early in the morning on the feast of the Kazan icon of the Mother of God, women went to the birch grove in search of leaves covered with frost. Having plucked such a leaf, they looked at it like a mirror. It was believed that after this the face will be cleansed and rejuvenated, and throughout the year the woman will have a young and beautiful appearance.

Late autumn weddings were usually timed for this holiday. It was believed that the Mother of God herself blesses young people for a happy life on this day. Moreover, if it rains on the wedding day, the young people will have a happy life. But if there is no rain, the family will not live long. And that's why too superstitious newlyweds even postponed the wedding on a sunny day in Kazan, so that the omen would not come true.

On this day, believers turn with hope to the patronage and intercession of the Mother of God of Kazan and say the words: "...Help us all, Queen and Mistress, who are in adversity, troubles and ailments, burdened by the sins of many before your Most Pure image, we pray with tears, placing our unshakable hope in You . Deliver us from all evil. Give us something useful and save us..."
